This isn't your typical Volunteer Project
You won't be spending your week doing endless stable cleaning or ticking off a list of chores.The idea behind Saddle Up for Conservation is simple: use horses as a way to experience and contribute to conservation. Your activities depend on the season, weather, wildlife and what is needed on the property at the time. You might spend the morning out on horseback monitoring wildlife, checking boundaries or looking for tracks and signs of animals. Another day might involve horse care, trail development, bush work or learning more about the challenges of protecting wildlife in this part of South Africa. There is no fixed script for every day. And that's intentional. You are coming to experience real life here – not a staged version of it.
What will you do ?
ONSERVATION ON HORSEBACK
Get out into the bush on horseback and experience the landscape from the saddle.
Depending on conditions and current needs, activities can include wildlife observation, tracking, boundary patrols and exploring areas of the property that are difficult to reach on vehicle.
WILDLIFE MONITORING
Learn to look beyond simply spotting an animal.
Tracks, dung, broken branches, sounds and other signs can tell you what has been moving through an area. You'll have the opportunity to learn more about the wildlife around you and contribute to ongoing observations.
HORSES & HORSE CARE
The horses are a big part of everyday life here.
You'll help with feeding, grooming, general wellbeing and tack, as well as spending time getting to know the individual horses.
Depending on the horses and their stage of training, there may also be opportunities to assist with the development of younger horses.
CONSERVATION & BUSH WORK
Conservation isn't always glamorous.
There can be practical jobs around the property, trail development, fence and boundary checks and other tasks that simply need doing.
You get involved where you're needed.
LEARNING ABOUT ANTI-POACHING
Poaching is a reality in South Africa, and conservation is about much more than seeing wildlife.
You'll learn about some of the challenges faced by people working to protect wildlife and gain a better understanding of what conservation looks like on the ground.
